In 2008 a small group of elite Michigan mountain bikers set out to create a new Mountain Bike team. We decided to build something focused on the joys and comradery of riding and racing off road instead of the typical "race team" or club that the cycling scene usually produces. Our goal was to be honest with ourselves and our friends in the cycling community. If we didn't have financial sponsors, so be it! We would buy our kits with our own money. All that mattered to us was the ride. We committed to never compromise on our vision or our integrity. To that end we do not pursue sponsors for the sake of another logo on our jersey. We value loyalty, and we partner with businesses and brands that we already ride.
We borrowed our name from our founder's family farm, Versluis Orchards. We often ride on the farm property, and for years before the creation of Farm Team Racing Versluis Orchards was already known for its winter Snow Cross cyclocross races. Today the "Farm Team" is synonymous with the farm and the cycling scene in its orbit.
By 2011 most of the team was riding Fat Bikes. We decided to discontinue our annual winter Snow Cross races at The Farm and create Farmer's Fat Bike Race. The inaugural running of Farmer's Fat Bike Race was a huge success. Nearly 100 riders participated, making it Michigan's largest Fat Bike event. Since then the race has continued to grow. In 2014 we expect to host 200 riders at Cannonsburg Ski Area.
In the years to come our focus will remain on no nonsense off road riding and racing. We will continue to support our sponsors because we choose to. And we will always put the honest enjoyment of riding bikes ahead of everything else. Because there is nothing better in life than a good bike ride, except maybe a Honey Crisp apple or a good pint of Michigan beer.
